Book a private escort and you deal with her from the first text. She wrote the ad and set the price, and what you pay is hers. Go through an agency and you're dealing with a business. Someone on reception answers, the agency sets the rate, and part of your money stays with the house.
Neither is safer as such. Agencies are more predictable. Your best booking will probably be with a private escort, and so might your worst.
What private and agency mean
Private and independent are the same thing. She works for herself, from home, from a room she rents by the hour, or from a flat she shares with a friend or two. If each of them keeps her own money and nobody is the boss, they're all still private.
An agency books escorts and keeps part of each fee. The bigger ones have their own premises, with a front desk, rooms and showers, and you go to them. Others mostly send women out to hotels.
Plenty of women do both, picking up agency shifts and seeing private clients on other days. If you met her through an agency, don't ask her to see you on the side. Some agencies turn a blind eye and some will drop her for it.
On Muse the card tells you which it is. It either says Private or names the agency, and every agency has its own page listing everyone on the roster.
How booking works
With a private escort you text her and she answers. You can ask her things and she can ask you things before either of you commits. Keep the first message short: your name, the day and time, how long, incall or outcall. There's more on that in the first-time guide.
With an agency you text or ring reception, reception asks her, and reception gets back to you. On a quiet weeknight that takes five minutes. On a Friday it can take half an hour, and sometimes nobody comes back at all. Rosters change every day, so the woman you had in mind may not be working.
A good receptionist makes up for it. Tell her what you're after and she'll tell you who's on tonight, then brief whoever you pick so nobody gets a surprise at the door. If you want to see someone within the hour, an agency is usually the quicker route.
A private escort does her own screening, so expect a question or two, and a deposit if it's an outcall. At an agency that's reception's job. You usually pay there too, and most take cards, often with a surcharge. A private escort mostly wants cash, at the start.
What it costs, and who gets the money
Agencies tend to charge one rate across the roster. One Auckland agency on Muse has every woman at the same hourly price. Private escorts set their own, so the spread is wider. For the national numbers, see the rates guide.
At an agency the house keeps a share of the base fee, usually somewhere between a third and a half, and anything extra you agree with her is hers. A private escort keeps the lot, but she has already paid for the room, the ads, the phone, the laundry and the petrol before you turn up. That's a big part of why private rates run a bit higher, and why a woman who leaves an agency to work for herself often puts her price up.
Check what the hour includes before deciding which is cheaper. Some agencies charge extra for a girlfriend experience where plenty of private escorts include it, and then the agency hour can come out dearer.
The city matters too. Christchurch agencies are well under Auckland and Wellington prices, and the top end in Wellington is $650 an hour or more.
Photos, and who opens the door
Bait and switch means the woman at the door isn't the one in the photos. It has less to do with private or agency than you'd think. A genuine private escort, or an agency with a proper address, is nearly always who you expected, give or take a kind description of her age.
Most of it comes from listings that call themselves independent when they aren't. Someone else runs them out of motels and rented houses, using photos of a woman who isn't there. You can usually tell before you go:
- The replies don't read like a woman texting about herself
- She can't answer a simple question about her own profile
- The address keeps changing, or only turns up once you're on your way
- Every photo is a glossy shoot and none of them are recent
- They want the whole fee transferred before you get an address
A genuine private escort writes like one person, has recent photos, works from the same place week to week and has been around a while. On Muse, look for the ID verified badge as well. It means she scanned a government ID and took a live selfie, and an independent ID service confirmed the two match and that she's 18 or over. That is all it checks.
If the wrong woman opens the door, you owe nothing. Say no, leave, and report the listing so we can look into it.
The booking itself
At an agency you come in through the front door and past reception, and sometimes you wait in a lounge. The hour starts when you walk in and covers both showers, and they log what time you arrived and left. If you want a full hour in bed, book ninety minutes. You might pass another client on your way out.
At a private escort's place you're in her space, with her music and her rules, and she's usually easier about the clock. It's closer to visiting someone than visiting a business. Read the incall guide before you knock on her door.
Discretion works out differently. Most agencies are in or near the CBD, which is awkward if you work there. A private escort's flat looks like any other flat from the street, but there's no one down the hall if something goes wrong, and at an agency there is.
However you booked her, she can say no to anything at any point, even halfway through, even after you've paid. Agency or private, that's always her call.
Why escorts work one way or the other
Lots of women start out at an agency. The bookings come in steadily, there are other women to learn from, and there's nothing to pay before the first client. Fixed shifts also suit anyone who has to be home for the school run.
Once they've built up regulars, many go private so they can run their own ads, set their own rules and choose who they see. So if a woman you liked has dropped off an agency roster, she may have a private profile now. For the escort's side of it, see how to become an escort in NZ.
Which one to book
Go through an agency if you want someone tonight or would like help choosing. It's also the easier first booking if you're worried the photos won't match. Pick one with a fixed address that has been around for years.
Book privately if you want to talk to her before you go, or you're hoping to become a regular. Every dollar goes to her, too. Run through the photo checks above before you book.
Outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch you won't get much choice. There are few agencies, and most of what you'll find is private.
Whichever you pick, if you like her, book her again. Second bookings are nearly always better.
